Project Overview Paul Pickford and I collaborated on this public art project. We were commissioned to work with a group of young people at Fairbridge North West to explore the history and uses of the Rochdale Canal through a series of workshops were we explored various techniques and materials. These workshops provided the platform for Paul and I to develop a permanent heritage based sculpture for the canal.
Project Details

The permanent wall-based sculpture consists of 3 steel disks which explore the Transport, Wildlife and Engineering of the Rochdale Canal. The cogs symbolise the engineering of water as it is moved along the canal through the lock systems, developed during the Victorian era.

The workshops with Fairbridge exlored the 3 themes of the final artwork and explored different art materials and techniques. These included: 3D wirework and ModRoc sculpture; Clay modelling & plaster casting and Mosaic.

Art forms Laser cut steel

Materials Mild Steel, Galvanised & Powder coated in black & white.

Installation The sculpture is on permanent display at Bridge 51 on the Rochdale Canal near Littleborough. Installed in June 2010.
Legacy The project was commissioned as part of a wider program to get young people better informed, and involved in Britain's waterways, along with improving the locality for the many members of the wider public who use the canal system.
