Project Overview

I was commissioned along with sculptor Marjan Wouda to deliver a community based public art project. The project involved 3 stages - a thorough public consultation phase, extensive community workshops with local groups & finally the design, making, fabrication & installation stage.

Project Details

Brian & Marjan delivered a number of consultation events to gain as wide a cross section of input into what the community wanted for their reservoir. After gathering the information we submitted our proposals to Groundwork MSSTT for approval. We delivered workshops in 4 local schools and a a local adult group to enable some of their ideas and artwork to influence our work.

Marjan Wouda created the landmark sculpture of a great crested newt as these are a major feature of the locality.

Brian Raymond used a series of stones reclaimed from the reservoir to create a seating area inspired by Gorton Tank, a part of the local railway heritage. The stones feature a series of 4 bas-relief stone carvings inspired by the local railway heritage carved by Brian Raymond. They also feature artwork created by some of the children during the workshops.

These include: Cast plaques made by children at a primary school and 4 mosaics created by year 10 pupils at a local secondary school.

Art forms stone carving, clay modelling, mosaic design, sculpture
Materials stone, clay, porcelain tiles
Installation On permanent display at Gorton Reservoir & Debdale Park, East Manchester.
Legacy The sculptures were commissioned as part of a programme to improve the locality.
