Project Overview I was commissioned along with 3 other artists to work with a group of students at 3 local schools. We were to explore and create artwork inspired by the Nobel Prize winning scientist Harry Kroto.
Project Details

Sir Harry Kroto discovered the Buckminsterfullerene molecule - the 3rd form of carbon in the universe after diamonds and graphite. The project started off with an internet linked lecture with Sir Harry Kroto from his lab in the USA. My workshops with a group of year 9 pupils explored the links his discovery has within maths, science & mapping projections.

The content of the workshops was very complex and involved. It consisted of constructing a model of a fullerene molecule which in mathematical terms is a truncated icosahedron, or foorball shaped. Becasue Sir Harry Kroto discovered this molecule while doing research in the constellations we chose to map key points taken from our self portrait wire models onto the flat surfaces that make up the football shape. We then 'unfolded' the football to lie it flat. This folding and unfolding action reflects some of the properties of the Fullerene. It also reflects the connection between us, the constellations and the Fullerene as the 3rd type of carbon atom which form part of the fundamental building blocks of all life in the universe - us included.

Art forms Wirework construction, construction, drawing, design.
Materials Molecule model construction, wire, card
Installation The artworks were displayed at a public exhibition at The University of Bolton.
Legacy The research work carried out by the 4 groups will be used as part of a bid to secure public funds for a large-scale public artwork to celebreate the work of this Nobel prize winning scientist who grew up in Bolton.
