Curious Minds (Creative Partnerships) & Brookvale Primary School |
| Project Overview |
I was selected by the pupils and staff of Brookvale Primary School in Runcorn to work with them and a historian to uncover the mystery of the sandstone relics that have stood outside the front of their school for a generation or more. |
| Project Details |
Working from the researched information the pupils brought to the arts workshops we designed and carved a series of stones that helped to explain some of the mystery and local history surrounding the original stones.
I worked with all 31 of the year 5 pupils and led 12 stone carving workshops with small groups of pupils. Each carved their own design into stone learning creative and design skills during the workshops. This really helped bring the history and research side of the project to life.
The 31 stones were incorporated into a permanent artwork feature installed at the school entrance.

| Legacy |
The project was commissioned as a way of engaging the pupils and staff in a creative learning process. The close working relationships between myself, the historian and the 2 class teachers resulted in a project that was imbedded into the National Curriculum. It provided many opportuniites for wider learning and skills development for pupils and staff including practical art-based skills, research, communication and presentation skills, local history, ICT and many others. The project has also been an excellent way of engaging with the wider community. |
